Manurewa Central School - Councillors
Each year eight Year 6 pupils are selected to be school councillors.
Being a school councillor means being a responsible pupil,
setting a first rate example, having a positive attitude, helping our fellow pupils, organising activities within our school and raising funds.
To be chosen as a councillor is an honour and a great opportunity to develop our leadership and organisational skills. It brings pride for us
and in what we do for our school.
We have fundraised for the South Auckland Hospice, sponsored a child from Starship Hospital,
welcomed and thanked visitors to our school and purchased a table tennis table.
Being a school councillor is indeed a privilege for us all.

NATIONAL YOUNG LEADERS DAY
On 19 May, our school councillors went to Young Leaders’ Day. We spent the day at the ASB showgrounds in Greenlane.
There were 6 speakers. The first speaker was Nick Tuitasi who discussed his 3 values.
- Truth
- Respect
- You
His messages were:
- Keep trying and don't give up
- Values are really important
- As a leader you need a decent reputation
The second speaker was Dillon Boucher from the Breakers and he gave us four really important tips.
- Leadership is strength with purpose
- To be successful you have to work hard.
- If you commit to something you will become good at it
- Leadership is choosing to follow your calling
We had morning tea when many of us bought a Halogen pin. The next speakers were Tumehe and Serena and their messages were
- Never give up
- Reach out for people
- Anything you want in your career comes down to believing
- Keep your eyes on the positive and it will help you through
- Keep pushing through
Pat Lam (The Auckland Blues’ rugby coach) had 5 key words and they were:
- Planning
- Purpose
- People
- Perseverance
- Performance
And his messages were:
- You can change your life
- Good times don't change your character
- Set your mind to something and you can achieve it
- Set some goals and write them down
Then came a performance by the Laughing Samoans and that was funny. Speaker number 5 was Dave Atkinson and he talked about being a leader with these messages …
- If you want to be a leader you need to make decisions
- Be friendly
- Say a good word
- Be yourself
The final speaker for the day was Pat Buckley and he had some really good messages.
- Good friends are honest
- You are on a journey
- Once choice can change your life
- You always have a choice
- The power of words can change everything
- There are always consequences to good and bad decisions
- Keep it simple
- Life gets complicated
- Enjoy being a kid
- It's ok to ask for help
- Remember the gravity principle
- Think before you act
Leadership is doing things differently.
What a great day at the National Young Leaders' Day.
